The Shapeshifter archetype represents adaptability, versatility, and a tendency to change appearance or behaviour. The Shapeshifter identity is so fluid it makes them unpredictable and hard to define. Loki, featured in Norse mythology, was known for changing forms to deceive and manipulate situations to serve his own ends.
Those who embody the Shapeshifter archetype are adept at altering their identity and behaviors, based on their situation or the environment. They can adjust to different circumstances and approach situations from different angles. If they’re conscious of this ability, a Shapeshifter can use it to understand and relate to the perspectives of others, develop empathy and use their fluid personality to navigate complex situations for good.
If you’re not conscious of the Shapeshifter archetype as a part of your personality, it can lead to a lack of transparency, authenticity and accountability. Constantly changing personas obscures the path to your genuine self, making it hard for others to establish true connections.
Some might find it hard to trust a person who embodies the Shapeshifter archetype because of the uncertainty surrounding their true intentions or identity. Too much adaptability can make a person indecisive. It tends to convey a lack of commitment making them untrustworthy at worst, and at best unreliable.
The Shapeshifter archetype can leverage its ability to adapt and change identities and use it to open the door for clandestine relationships. And because the Shapeshifter can maintain more than one identity, they are adept at, for example, keeping an extramarital affair hidden while maintaining their marriage. But only for so long.
Kris, the husband of a client, embodied the Shapeshifter archetype. He was able to take on different personas to conceal his real intentions. He deceived those around him by creating another identity for himself. The ability to maintain a secret love affair is complex but it can be less complicated when you embrace the Shapeshifter archetype.
When left unregulated, the multifaceted nature of the Shapeshifter archetype can leave everyone involved open to betrayal. The Shapeshifter can manipulate perceptions and trust. Their adaptability enables them to navigate the complexities of maintaining a secret love affair. The problem is that it blurs the lines between loyalty and deception. The Shapeshifter’s capacity to transform their personality can be a destructive tool for concealing emotions and actions, that leads to clandestine romances marked by secrecy and betrayal.
Loki’s character embodies the complexity of moral ambiguity and the consequences of mischief and the betrayal of self and others.
While the characteristics of this archetype are fluid, journaling with the Shapeshifter can give you insights into how it may affect your life. Journaling can help you to spot this archetype in others and recognise it not only in a negative light, but also as a force for good.
